Caffeinated Reviewer | Tolkien Reading Day

25th Mar

Tolkien Reading Day is held on the 25th of March each year. The date of the 25th of March was chosen as the date on which the Ring was destroyed, completing Frodo’s quest and vanquishing Sauron.

I first read the series when I was pregnant with my first child back in 1990. Color me a romantic, but my husband and I read them together at night, taking turns reading chapters aloud as we traveled with Frodo.

I loved the world that J. R. R. Tolkien created. My fondness for the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings was renewed when the movie adaptation came on the scene. I’ve re-read the books since then and hope to listen to them on audio.

The story has a wonderful message and is filled with quotes you’ll enjoy again and again.

“If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.”

Today, I will spend some quiet time re-reading & listening to The Hobbit where it all began…. the story of how a Baggins had an adventure, and found himself doing and saying things altogether unexpected…

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum.

“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hold, and that means comfort.”
