Chain of Iron by Cassandra Clare – Right Writing Words

“Love is not always a lightning bolt. Sometimes it is a creeping vine. It grows slowly until suddenly it is all that there is in the world.”

Title: Chain of Iron (The Last Hours, #2)
Author: Cassandra Clare
Release Date: 2 March 2021
Rating: 4/5 stars

It’s safe to say that this book was one of my most anticipated reads of the year, and I was lucky to score a hardback copy that wasn’t too expensive!

I have to admit that I found the plot to be a bit wobbly and unimportant compared to the character’s struggles. This is a character-driven book, but many conflicts were too easily resolved or glossed over entirely.

Concerning the characters, nothing has changed my opinion of them. I still love each and every one of them incredibly. Each time a familiar character shows up in a scene, I feel all warm and fuzzy in my heart. The scenes detailing the domestic bliss of Cordelia and James were heavenly and I think we all wish to experience love like they have.

I have also been reminded of how incredibly young the characters are. The realization that many of the main characters are only 17 has thrown me off track a few times and kept me from enjoying the story as much as I would have wanted to.

I’m glad that Matthew’s drinking has finally been addressed, and I would have loved to see more of Christopher, Thomas, and Alastair.

But in contrast to that, my hate for Grace and her stupid bracelet has only grown. There were many scenes where I simply wanted to shove her out of a window, and no amount of tragic backstory will change my feelings concerning Grace.

The miscommunication at the end frustrated me incredibly and I’m still unsure about how I feel about the new love triangle, despite seeing it coming.

Despite the critique, I still enjoyed this book, despite everything that happened between Cordelia and James. If Cassandra Clare published a book detailing James and Cordelia’s everyday, ordinary lives you can bet every penny you have that I would buy that book the second it hit the bookstores.

That’s it!
